Abstract

A thermosetting composition for bonding sand moulds comprises 100 parts of furfuryl alcohol, 20 to 50 parts of maleic or substituted maleic acid or anhydride, e.g. maleic or chloromaleic anhydride, and, optionally, 2 to 10 per cent of urea, 0.2 to 5 per cent of inhibitor, e.g. ammonium chloride, and up to 20 per cent of water. Metal casting shells may be prepared by dump box or core blowing techniques, e.g. by mixing the composition with sand and blowing into hot patterns at 300 DEG to 600 DEG F., or into cold patterns and curing the green shells by oven, infra-red or dielectric heating.
