988,890. Cartridge-operated tools and cartridges therefor. OLIN MATHIESON CHEMICAL CORPORATION. June 28, 1962 [July 25, 1961], No. 24888/62. Headings F3A and F3C. [Also in Division B4] A composite cartridge 1, primarily intended for use in cartridge-operated tools, comprises a metal rimfire cartridge 4 and a non-metallic jacket 5 which has an outer diameter adjacent the rim substantially equal to the maximum diameter of the head 2. The jacket is preferably made of a self-lubricating synthetic plastics such as an olefinic polymer, nylon or a tetrafluorethylene resin, but may be made from helically wound paper tape impregnated with a lubricant such as graphite, wax, oil or grease. The jacket may be closed at one end to cover the mouth of the cartridge (Fig. 4, not shown). Fig. 2 shows a cartridge with jacket 15 in a breech block 20, the jacket being bevelled as at 16 to allow a transversely acting pin 21 to strike the rim. A flat-faced ejector pin 13 is also provided. In Fig. 3 cartridge 4 has a tapered jacket 25 and fits into a tapered recess 71 in a striker block 70. The cartridge is fired by movement of the striker block by hand against a piston 60 thereby causing a projection 73, or alternatively a longitudinally or transversely acting firing pin to detonate the cartridge.
