Abstract
987,985. Electrophotographic apparatus. RANK-XEROX Ltd. April 19, 1961 [April 19, 1960], No. 14107/61. Heading G2H. [Also in Division B8] Magnetic xerographic developer material is conveyed along a surface by the action of an alternating magnetic field. In Fig. 4 polepieces 12 are encircled in pairs by coils coupled to the respective phases of an A.C. supply 40. Alternatively there may be a separate coil 12 for each respective polepiece 10 (Figs. 1,2 and 3, not shown). The coils 12 may alternatively be energized separately by the action of a commutator. The latter may serve two diametrically opposed moving contacts and the wiring correspondingly arranged so that at any given time two spaced apart polepieces are energized. This enables two separate amounts of the material to be conveyed along the same surface. As applied to a xerographic developer (Fig. 7) the surface 16 may curve upwardly from a container 62 for the magnetic material and may be in contact at 60 with the image-bearing xerographic surface 61. The material drops back from the end of the conveyer into the container 62. As applied to a rotating xerographic drum (Fig. 9), the conveyer s arranged so that the material carrying surface is carried on the side of a single magnetic member 30 facing away from the xerographic drum 70 and is then cascaded over the drum. In a modification (Fig. 8, not shown) the material is arranged to pass upwards on the side of the member 30 facing the drum 70.
