Abstract
987,310. Transformers. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Dec. 30, 1963 [Jan. 7, 1963; March 12, 1963], Nos. 736/63 and 9744/63. Heading H1T. A device which is used in the metering of current flowing in a conductor and which comprises a coil wrapped round a non-ferromagnetic support, is arranged so that the coil is magnetically coupled to the current-carrying conductor without having to interrupt the flow of current. In one embodiment (Fig. 1) a resilient support 1, of insulating material, is clipped over a current-carrying conductor 5 and the ends 7, 8 of the coil 1 are led to a metering arrangement through a pole 9 fixed to the support. In a second embodiment two coil sections 28, 29 (Fig. 3) are embedded within semi-circular support limbs 30, 32 which are hinged together and which are urged into abutment at 39 by a spring 38 attached to the hinge 37. These embodiments may be modified by sealing the coil and support within a sleeve of plastic material to prevent ingress of moisture and, in the second embodiment, a gaiter may be arranged to enclose the hinged section of the support. The second embodiment may be modified further by either arranging the pole on one limb of the support to be adjacent the hinge or arranging that each semi-circular limb is provided with a pole; the poles being hinged together at a position remote from the support. In another modification, the coil may be mounted in a tube and arranged within another tube the tubes being bent to form a closed loop. The necessary opening may be achieved in much the same manner as in a Bourdon gauge by fluid under pressure. A third embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown) comprises three series connected coils embedded in a support, the coils being arranged so that the conductor may be located at equal distances from each of them. A further modification is described in which the support of the device is in the form of a helix having only one turn. In all the embodiments an isolating transformer or a radio transmitter may be mounted on the pole adjacent the carrier and connected to the coil.
