Abstract
979,648. Transformers. LICENTIA PATENT - VERWALTUNGS - G.m.b.H. Jan. 2, 1962 [Jan. 4, 1961], No. 126/62. Heading H1T. A transformer, in which the low voltage winding 15 is situated between the core 14 and the sectionalized winding 16, has a surge limiting circuit consisting of a choke 21 and a parallel impedance 22 mounted within the transformer tank and connected between the H.T. terminal on the tank and the innermost end 19 of the winding 16, the outer tapped section 17 of this winding being connected to the neutral line or point via the tapping switch 18. The impedance 22 may be a pure resistance and may be made of material, such as granular silicon carbide, which is characterized by a rapid fall in resistance during the initial part of the voltage surge. The impedance 22 may alternatively consist of an inductance and resistance in series and these components may be accommodated along with magnetic core members within the bore of the choke 21. Shield rings associated with the input section of the winding 16 may be connected to the point 20 instead of the point 19 as is usual.
