Abstract

A continuous-filament, synthetic yarn consists of a number of species of trilobal filaments, the individual filaments within each species being of essentially the same denier but the species differing from each other in denier, with the distribution of denier values over all the filaments constituting the yarn being such as to give a ratio of the standard deviation to the mean denier of the filaments of at least 0.1, a skewness coefficient from -0.7 to +0.7 (i.e. not too unsymmetric a distribution), and a kurtosis coefficient not greater than 4 (i.e. not a sharply peaked distribution). The cross-section of the filaments may be concavely or convexly trilobal. The yarn-for example of nylon-is extruded from a spinneret drawn and given a hot relaxation treatment. Examples of various yarns are given, with the denier, and average tip radius, modification ratio and arm angle of the filaments. The use of these yarns in a fabric is stated to reduce or remove the visibility of yarn junctions. Specification 986,718 is referred to.
