Abstract

A continuous-filament synthetic yarn consists of a number of species of trilobal filaments, the individual filaments within each species having substantially the same modification ratio but the species differing from each other in respect of the ratio, with the distribution of the ratios of all the filaments in the yarn being such as to give a standard deviation of at least 0.08, a skewness coefficient from -0.7 to +0.7 (i.e. not too unsymmetric a distribution) and a kurtosis coefficient not greater than 4 (i.e. not a sharply peaked distribution). The cross-section of the filaments may be concavely or convexly trilobal. The modification ratio is the ratio of the radius of the circumscribed circle to that of the inscribed circle of the cross-section of the filament. The yarn-for example nylon-is extruded from a spinneret, drawn and given a hot relaxation treatment. Examples of various yarns are given, with the modification ratio, tip radius, and arm angle of each filament. The use of these yarns as a fabric is stated to reduce or remove the visibility of yarn junctions. Specifications 924,087, 924,090 and 986,719 is referred to.
