Abstract

1277783 Trilobal synthetic filaments ROHM & HAAS CO 25 July 1969 [29 July 1968] 37472/69 Heading B5B A filament of a synthetic polymer has a non- symmetrical cross-section comprising three branches of approximately equal length radiating from a common centre C (Fig. 6), the branches having spacing angles O 1 , O 2 and O 3 of 90 to 105 degrees, 65 to 85 degrees and 45 to 60 degrees, respectively, and the filament having a modification ratio r 3 /r 1 of from 1À8 to 3À5. A suitable spinneret orifice for spinning such filaments is shown in Fig. 4a, and comprises a trifurcated slot each of whose branches has a leg of length L and a foot of length F, where L : F is between 5 : 3 and 5 : 7, one of the branches being bent in the opposite direction from the other two. The branches of the slot may alternatively be curved (Fig. 4b, not shown). In an example filaments are melt-spun from polycaprolactam, cooled in air, and stretched. The filaments have excellent crimpability.
