Abstract
986,651. Woodworking. WADKIN Ltd. March 12, 1964 [Dec. 12, 1962], No. 42676/62 Heading B5L. A woodworking machine such as a planing or moulding machine, comprises a pressure feed arrangement having a work-engaging feed roller 14 urged against a workpiece by a fluid pressure operated cylinder 19, the force of which is maintained approximately constant throughout its stroke by a pressure control device. As described, the machine has two feed rollers which are mounted on arms 15 movable about a common pivot 16, the arms having extensions 17 connected by links 18 to fluid pressure operated cylinders 19. The rollers are driven from a gear mounted coaxial with the pivot 16 and co-operate with freely-rotatable rollers 12 which extend through openings 13 in a table 11 of the machine. In an alternative embodiment, the feed rollers are mounted on arms mounted on separate pivots outwardly of the rollers, the cylinders being mounted on a casing 25. The pressure control device may comprise a blowoff valve in the circuit to the pressure side of the cylinders, the circuit also having a reversing valve. whereby the supply to the cylinders is reversed to raise the feed rollers. A verticallyadjustable bracket 29 is secured to the casing 25 at the infeed end of the machine and has a pivotally mounted feeler 34 which is moved in the event of an oversize workpiece being fed to the machine and operates a valve in the upper part 30 of the bracket to cause actuation of the reversing valve so that the feed rollers 14 are raised to render the machine inoperative. If a low workpiece is followed by a fairly high workpiece which, although it does not actuate the feeler 34, is not acceptable by the feed rollers 14 because of their low position, a second feeler device is operated, the device having an adjustable casing 41 supporting side pressure rollers 44 and a feeler arm 51 which normally bears against the side faces of the workpiece. When a fairly high workpiece following a low workpiece is held back by the feed rollers, the feeler arm detects the gap between the workpiece and rocks about a pivot 49 to move a lever arm 48 connected to a valve 45 which actuates the reversing valve to lift the feed rollers.
