A grinding machine has a rotary grinding wheel, a work rest adjacent the wheel for supporting a workpiece presented to the wheel, and a presser arm for urging the workpiece against the periphery of the wheel, the arm being furnished at a first part with means for pivotally mounting the arm on the machine to provide a fulcrum for the arm at one side of the wheel and being equipped at a second part with means against which pressure can be applied in a horizontal or substantially horizontal direction to exert a lever action on a workpiece on the work rest to apply it against the grinding wheel. In a grinding machine, similar to that in Specification 1,049,468, used for fettling castings, the workpiece 24 on the work rest 7 is pressed against the grinding wheel 5 by a rectangular steel bar 11 pivoted at 18 and provided at its outer end with a cushioning pad 12 of substantial width and length against which the operative applies his body weight. A vertical work-engaging plate 23 is attached to the bar. The pivot-pin 18 passes through an aperture at the end of the bar and is adjustably secured in a slot 17 in the horizontal limb 16 of a bracket secured to the machine casing. The bar has an alternative pivot aperture 22 in an offset part 21. In a modification, the pivot-pin is adjustably secured in any one of three slots formed in an angled extension of the work rest. The work rest has holes 25 to receive vertical 1 presser bars for manoeuvring round or awkwardly shaped castings.
