Abstract

847,344. Linear-dimension gauges. CINCINNATI MILLING MACHINE CO. Dec. 12, 1958 [Dec. 30, 1957], No. 40131/58. Class 106 (2). [Also in Groups XXIII and XXIX] A rotating workpiece 15 is supported during grinding by shoes 13, 14. The shoe 14 is pivoted and moves in accordance with the reduction in diameter of the workpiece. An arm 28 secured to the shoe 14 has an abutment surface 29 facing an orifice 30 on the end of a nozzle 31. Compressed air is supplied to the nozzle 31 through regulating valve 131 and throttle valve 133; as the workpiece is reduced in diameter, the shoe rocks clockwise and moves the abutment surface 29 closer to the orifice 30 so as to restrict the outflow of air from the orifice and thus build up back pressure to operate pressure switches 143, 144 through pneumatic relays 136, 137 provided with a source of constant reference pressure through a regulating valve 140. The grinding wheel 18 is fed into the workpiece at a coarse feed rate until the workpiece has been ground to a predetermined diameter whereupon pressure switch 143 is operated, this causing illumination of an amber signal light and reduction of the feed rate to a fine feed rate. This continues until the workpiece has been ground to the desired diameter whereupon pressure switch 144 is operated, this causing illumination of a green signal light and retraction of the grinding wheel.
