Abstract

647,777. Lathe centre-rests. SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND), Ltd., S. May 15, 1947, No. 13176. [Class 88 (iii)] A work-steady for a lathe is separately mounted from the cutter and comprises three or more rollers 16 mounted within a non-rotating one-piece sleeve 22 with their axes parallel to the work axis, and adjusting means 18, 29, for simultaneously moving the rollers to or from the work axis to centre the work automatically. Rotation of the threaded collar 29 moves the wedges 18 to advance the rollers against the . pressure of springs 19, 20. In a modification, Figs. 4 and 5, the rollers are pivoted to a member 60 which is rotated to cause a cam 69 to adjust .the rollers. The member 60 is locked by screws 82.
