[Class 80(iv)] A guard for the rotating cutter 6 of a joiner or like wood-working machine comprises a shield plate 9 arched over the cutter 6 with its longitudinal edges resting on the machine worktable 4 and pivoted from a lever block 11 fulcrumed on a pin 12 at the rear of the worktable by two parallel links. 10 disposed substantially beneath the worktable surface. A tension spring 15 acting through an arm 14 partially counteracts the weight of the shield plate and links, and a tension spring 16 disposed between the links 10 leads the shield plate towards an adjustable work guide fence 7. The arrangement is such that an upwardly and forwardly inclined deflector horn 20 either causes the shield plate 9 to lift when a flat piece of material 21 is fed into the machine, after which the weight of the shield plate 9 returns the latter to the worktable, or alternatively causes the shield plate to move across the worktable if a piece of material is fed edgewise into the machine, after which the spring 16 returns the shield plate towards the guide fence 7, movement being limited by a stop screw 18. A further horn 24 may be provided to ease the return of the shield plate 9 to the rest position, and both horns may be replaced by a handle (not shown), for manual lifting of the shield plate. Manual pressure on the latter in a downwardly direction or towards the guide fence 7 prevents bucking of the material passing through the machine.
