Abstract

775,814. Sawing. STENNERS OF TIVERTON, Ltd. Jan. 26, 1956 [Feb. 21, 1955], No. 5182/55. Class 145 A band or circular saw mill has a deflector 2 which is fitted rearwardly of the saw 16 and is mounted so that, during feed of the log to the saw, it is moved out of the path of the log but, during return of the log to its initial position, can move into the path of the sawn face of the log to deflect the returning log laterally clear of the saw. The deflector is preferably bevelled to give a V-shaped edge 10 so that, if'the cut-off plank returns with the log, it is also deflected laterally but the bevel may be provided only on the edge of the deflector nearest the sawn face of the log. The deflector may be controlled manually of by the reciprocating movement of the log carriage and/or be biased to the deflecting position by weight or spring means and it may be a plate guided in a straight or curved path sloping downwardly away from the saw or mounted on pivoted links. As shown, the deflector is on a pivoted arm 3 weighted at 6 and the face 11 is flat so that it is depressed by the log during feed to the saw. An abutment 13 on the deflector limits the upward movement by engaging an adjustable stop 23. The log carriage comprises two tables 14, 15 arranged one on each side of the saw and movable in unison on rollers 17 carried by spindles 18 supported in ball bearings 19. One of the spindles 18 may provide the pivot for the deflector.
