Abstract

1,265,028. Grinding. LIBBEY-OWENSFORD CO. 29 May, 1969 [3 June, 1968], No. 27255/69. Heading B3D. An edge grinding machine, e.g. for sheets of glass, which comprises a rotatable work-table 11, a main grinding unit 25 including a grinding wheel 28 adapted to engage an exposed edge of the workpiece, a primary template 13 carried by the work-table and a template follower roll 38 carried by the grinding unit 25 to control engagement of the grinding wheel 28 with the workpiece edge as the work-table rotates, also includes an auxiliary grinding unit 41 including a grinding wheel 42 of smaller diameter than the wheel 28, an auxiliary template 44 carried by the work-table 11 adjacent the template 13 and corresponding to a selected portion only of the workpiece edge. A template follower roll 45 is carried by the unit to control engagement of the wheel 42 with the selected portion of the workpiece edge, and means is provided for moving the unit 41 into and out of engagement with the workpiece. In the machine described the main grinding unit includes two grinding units and associated template followers. The units are supported from a member 30 pivotally mounted at 31 to the end of an arm 33 pivoted on the machine frame at 34. The units are urged against workpieces 15 by a cable 36 and weight. The auxiliary grinding unit 41 is mounted on a swingable arm 65 and is moved into or out of engagement with the workpieces at predetermined positions of the workpieces by a pneumatic piston and cylinder device 103. Posts 54, 55 carried by the work-table actuate switches 52, 53 which are mounted on the machine frame and control the supply of pressure to the cylinder 100 as the work-table rotates.
