A grinding machine of the type in which the wheel axis a, Fig. 5, is tiltable, so that the flat surface of the wheel 13 may make roughing and finishing cuts on a workpiece 10, has a reversible power actuator 30, Fig. 3, mounted on a pivoted tool-supporting member 16 and connected to a slide 17 to swing the member 16 about a horizontal pivot whereby a stop 28 is moved into or out of engagement with an abutment 25 so that the wheel 13 may be selectively disposed in a plane, either parallel to that of the work support 11 or at an angle thereto, for finishing and roughing cuts respectively. The workpieces 10 are mounted on a rotary table 11 for successive engagement by the wheel 13, the feed in relation to the inclination of the wheel to the face of the work being in the direction shown in Fig. 5 and the angle of tilt being sufficient to raise the periphery of the leading edge of the wheel slightly above the face of the work during the roughing cut. The member 16 is amounted on the slide 17 by a horizontal pivot pin and is clamped to the slide in the selected, position. by bolts 21 which are threaded into the slide, as shown in Fig. 6 through clearance holes in screwed members 23 threaded through ears 24, 25, at the upper end of the saddle 16; by initially adjusting the members 23 the saddle may be moved towards or away from the slide to locate the spindle 14 vertically. The piston rod 35 of the actuator 30 operates a crank 36 on a shaft 37, one end of which is held in a, journal 39 on the slide 17 and the other is threaded through a nut 44 mounted in the ear 24 of the member 16. Rotation of the shaft 37 therefore moves the nut axially in one direction or the other and so rocks the member 16 about its pivot to bring, the spindle 14 to the required position with the corresponding stops 27, 28 abutting either the ear 24 or 25 ; both stops are adjustably carried in lugs 29 on the face of the slide 17. Preferably the actuator is of the pneumatic type with solenoidoperated control valves so that the spindle may be tilted toward and away from the vertical by opening and closing a switch.
