Abstract
Stable foamed aqueous slurries of clay are calcined to yield a clay not requiring grinding and yet suitable for use as a filler or pigment. The foamed slurry is fed into the calcining furnace as a spray or as a layer on refractory slabs. The solids/liquid ratio may be increased by adjusting the pH value of the slurry by known methods or by adding a deflocculating agent. The deflocculating agents e.g. sodium carbonate, silicate, hexametaphosphate or pyrophosphate, may be incorporated into the slurry prior to the addition of the foaming agent e.g. sodium alkyl naphthaelene sulphonates and saponin. The foam may be produced by whisking or by gas generation in situ e.g. acid-carbonate or alkali-aluminium reactions occurring in the slurry or it may be generated in the spraying head of the furnace. The example refers to a foamed slurry being calcined at 1100 DEG C. in an oxidizing atmosphere, the resulting mass being in a friable cellular state.
