Abstract

Cellular building or refractory shapes are prepared by grinding waste material e.g. broken bricks, kiln waste, slags, glass waste or fly ash into powder adding water and, if desired, up to 30 per cent. by weight of clay, adding a foam or a foaming agent and forming the foam by aeration of the mixture, shaping, drying and firing. Up to 10 per cent. by weight of an organic binder e.g. urea-formaldehyde or phenol-formaldehyde may be present, as also may electrolytes e.g. sodium silicate or carbonate in an amount up to 5 per cent. by weight. A coating of an organic binder may be applied before firing. The mix can be fed onto a conveyer belt and prevented from spreading beyond the width of the belt by providing synchronously moving bands at right angles and on either side of the belt.
