A paternoster lift type of mechanical garage employs only one endless chain or cable to carry the vehicle platforms, the platforms being fitted with rollers which run in guides whose reaction on these rollers (and hence on the platforms) is normal to the plane of the chain or cable. Pivot-pins of the endless chain 1 carry rollers 10 which run in chain guides 17, 18 and the same pivot-pins carry struts 13, 14 which meet in pairs at support elements 15 from which the platforms 28 are suspended by further struts 26, 27. The support elements 15 carry rollers 34 which run in a guide 35 and the platforms carry rollers 32 which run in a guide 33. The guides 33 and 35 are in planes parallel to but on opposite sides of the plane of chain 1, and their reactions on the rollers 34 are therefore in opposite directions normal to the plane of the chain. The tendency of these reactions, which are not aligned, to rotate the platform about a vertical axis is counteracted by the reactions on supplementary rollers (not shown) associated with, but mounted on horizontal axles perpendicular to, the rollers 32, 34. Likewise the tendency of the suspended platforms to turn about a horizontal axis may be counteracted by suitable offsetting of the centre of platforms from their suspension members 15 thereby producing a vertical couple counterbalancing the couple due to the difference in level between the rollers 32 and 34. In Fig. 1, each platform 28 lies between the planes of the chain 1 and the guide 33. Figs. 3 to 5 (not shown) depict arrangements in which each such platform is associated with a further platform on the opposite side of plane of the chain.
