Abstract
Gaseous hydrogen fluoride is removed from a gas mixture containing hydrogen chloride and hydrogen fluoride by contacting with aqueous boric acid solution containing hydrochloric acid in sufficient amount that the pressure of the hydrogen chloride is equal to the partial pressure of the hydrogen chloride in the mixture. The gas mixture, e.g. resulting from CCl4 + HF --> CCl2F2 + HCl, may be passed through a gas liquid contactor, e.g. a packed tower, which is irrigated with an aqueous solution of boric acid in HCl containing 5-10% HF with a F : B ratio of 2-4: 1 and saturated with HCl at a partial pressure of 0.5 atm. The HF reacts with H3BO3 to give HB.F4. In an example a gas containing HCl, HF and N2 was passed through a Drechsel bottle containing an aqueous solution at 30 DEG C. of HF, H3BO3 and HCl.
