Abstract

Fluorite is purified by reacting the impure fluorite with hydrogen fluoride in an amount sufficient to convert a preselected amount of impurities into flourides. The fluorite may be mixed with aqueous HF at 80 DEG - 150 DEG C. so that the fluorite is wetted, but not kneaded. The HF may be sufficient to convert silica to SiF4, which is evolved with carbon dioxide, and other impurities to fluorides insoluble in HF. The aqueous HF may be the "acid drips" or impure initial condensate at 20 DEG - 40 DEG C. from an HF plant, containing H2O, H2SO4, HF, H2SiF6, and fluosulphonic acids. Alternatively, the fluorite may be treated in gaseous suspension at 150 DEG - 500 DEG C. by passing gaseous HF through a fluidized bed of fluorite. The purified fluorite may be reacted with H2SO4 to form pure HF.
