Abstract
Monomethylamine nitrate is prepared by contacting approximately equimolar proportions of nitric acid and methylamine at 160250 DEG C. in a vertical or inclined tubular reactor free to drain at its lower end and filled with inert packing material, and removing the reaction products in two phases, one of which is substantially steam and the other molten methylamine nitrate, from the lower end of the reactor. The molten methylamine nitrate may be stripped with a countercurrent stream of hot dry inert gas to reduce the moisture content to below 0,5%. The nitric acid used may contain up to 80% water; the methylamine may be gaseous, liquid, or in aqueous solution. The reactants may be introduced into the reactor separately or through a mixing apparatus.
