[Also in Division F1] Apparatus for the size reduction of refuse which is to be destroyed by combustion comprises drive means 4 for moving a first frame member 2 towards and away from a second frame member 1, and first and second shearing means 15<SP>1</SP>, 15 on the first and second frame members, the second shearing means being offset from the first shearing means to permit interdigitation of the shearing means in one. end position of the first frame member. The first frame member 2 is connected by a pivot 3 to the second frame member and has a convex portion formed with the first shearing means which consists of bars 15<SP>1</SP> separated by spaces 15a. The second shearing means consists of similar bars 15 offset from the bars 15<SP>1</SP> so that when the first frame member is moved to the position shown dotted, the bars 15<SP>1</SP> extend between the bars 15. A spring-loaded cover 16 is mounted on a pivot 16g on the second frame member to close the spaces between the bars 15 except when moved by the bars 15<SP>1</SP>. The drive means for the first frame member comprises a motor 4 having a piston 7 connected to the frame member and movable by hydraulic fluid from a pump 14b and valve arrangement 13 comprising a reversing valve 30 having a spool 31 connected to a device 41 responsive to the pressure in one end of the motor, the movement of the spool in one direction being controlled by a dashpot 44. In operation, when refuse is initially fed to the apparatus, the spool 31 is positioned so that fluid pressure is supplied from the pump 14b to a line 11 to move the first frame member towards the second and crush the refuse until a predetermined pressure in line 11 moves the piston 40 of device 41 against t spring 43 so that the spool 31, which is connected to the piston 40 by rods 38, 39, acts to reverse the supply to the motor 4 and retract the frame member 1 from frame member 2, a valve 50 in the piston 45 of the dashpot opening so that the movement of the spool is not retarded. On retraction of the frame member 1, the partially crushed refuse drops lower between the frame members in preparation for the next movement of the frame member which is delayed until the spring 43 has moved the spool back to its initial position against the restriction of the fluid in the dashpot passing from one side of its piston 45 to the other through an orifice 48. The action of the frame member continues until the material is sheared by the bars 15<SP>1</SP> entering the spaces between the bars 15, the cover 16 moving to the position shown dotted to permit the material to fall out of the apparatus. In other embodiments, both frames may be movable by separate drive means, more than one cylinder may operate the, or each, frame, or a pneumatic or mechanical drive may operate the frames.
