Depending from plunger 21 is a stem 33 that extends through a bushing 34 that is seated in the lower end of housing 30 and arranged on said stem 33 between the upper end of said bushing and the underside of plunger 31 is an expansive coil spring 35. e
Arranged on the underside of spring beam 16 is a cover or box 36 within which is located a switch 37, to which'latter is connected the conductors forming the circuit between the source of electric current supply and the motor that operates the crushing machine and projecting upwardly from said switch and disposed directly below the lower end of the stem 33, is a switch arm or plunger 38.
Under normal operating conditions, rod 24 is adjusted in the distance rod so that the upper end of stem 32 that forms a part of the switch actuating plunger, bears against the at underface 26 on said rod and as long as the crusher performs its intended functions, the ilat underiace 26 rides backward and forward upon the upper end of the stem 32 as the yielding jaw vibrates within its normal limits.
Should an uncrushable piece of material or a piece of metal such as a clipper tooth pass from the hopper 11 into the space between the jaws, the yielding jaw 14 will be moved abnormally outward against the resistance offered by the spring cushion and such movement effects a depression of the plunger 31 as the upper end oi' stern 32 rides downwardly on the inclined face 29 and into the flat face 28, suchaction occurring as the result of the abnormal outward sliding movement of rod 24 and which latter is carried by the distance rod 22.
-As a result of the depression of the plunger, the lowerend of stem 33 engages switch arm or plunger 38 and forces the same downwardly to open switch 37, thereby cutting oil the current supply to the moto'i` that operates the crusher with the result, that the latter ceases to function and consequently avoids breakage and distortion of parts due to the presence of the uncrushable object between the jaws.
After the uncrushable object has been removed from the Jaws, the switch 3'1 automatically returns to its closed position under the influence of a spring associated with arm or plunger 38 and the spring 35 actuates the plunger as the lower portion of the yielding jaw moves inward so as to reposition the flat face 26 directly aboveI the upperend of stem 32.
The position of rod 24 having the rlat underiace 26 may be readily adjusted so as to regulate and control the switch throwing operation by.
abnormal conditions arising from the entrance of an uncrushable piece of material or a foreign object such as a piece oi.' metal, into the space between the jaws oi.' the crusher.
It will be understood that minor changes in the size, form and construction of the various parts of my improved automatic control for crushing machines may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the spirit of my invention, the scope of which is set forth in the appended claims.
- I claim as my invention:
1. The combination with an electric motor operated crushing machine and its yielding jaw, of a spring cushion connected to the lower portion ofthe yielding jaw for yieldingly resisting movement-of said jaw away from the swinging jaw, a xed beam that is engaged by the rear portion ot said spring cushion, a switch carried by said beam and located in the electric circuit to the motor that operates the machine, an adjustable rod arranged in the spring cushion and a spring held plunger arranged for operation in said beam and adapted to be actuated by said rod for operating said switch.
2. In an electric motor operated crushing machine having a yielding Jaw, a fixed beam, an electric switch mounted on said beam, which switch is located in the electric circuit to the motor that operates the machine and a spring cushion arranged between the yielding jaw and the ilxedvbeam, a rod connected to said spring cushion for longitudinal movement therewith,
a portion of which rod extends into the fixed beam and a plunger arranged for sliding movement in said fixed beam, which plunger is adapted to be engaged by said rod and moved so as to actuate said electric switch as a result of abnormal outward movement of ,the yielding Jaw and spring cushion.
3.'In an electric motor operated crushing machine having a yielding jaw, a. ilxed beam, an electric switch mounted on said beam, which switch is located in the electric circuit to the motor that operates the machine and a spring cushion arranged between the yielding jaw and the ilxed beam, an extensible rod pivotally connected to said spring cushion for longitudinal movement therewith, a portion of which rod extends into the fixed beam and a plunger arranged for sliding movement in said ilxed beam, which plunger is adapted to be engaged by said rod and moved so as to actuate said electric switch as a result oi' abnormal outward movement of the yielding jaw and spring cushion.
4. The combination with an electric motor driven crushing machine having a spring cushion resisted yielding jaw and a switch located in the circuit in which the driving motor of the crushing machine is located, of a spring heid plunger for actuating said switch and a member connected to the spring cushion of the yielding Jaw of the machine and movable therewith for actuating said plunger and opening said switch in the event of abnormal movement of the yielding Jaw.
