Abstract

984,576. Two-part couplings. HARVEY HUBBELL Inc. Nov.23, 1961 [March 6, 1961], No. 42002/61. Heading H2E. A connector comprises a plug 1 with pins 6, 7 at least one of which has at least one groove 11, a socket with a body 2 containing contacts 18, 19 and locking means. One part 18b, 19b of contacts 18, 19 constitutes an entry part for the insertion of pins 6, 7, and another part 18c, 19c constitutes a locking part. At least one of contacts 18, 19 has in its locking part 18c, 19c an inwardly extending protrusion 24 engageable with groove 11 in the grooved pin so that inserting plug 1 into the socket and twisting plug 1 locks it to body 2. As shown, both pins 6, 7 have grooves 11 and both contacts 18, 19 have protrusions 24. Also both pins 6, 7 have grooves 10. Body 2 has a cover 3 with arcuate slots 25, 26 with entry parts 25a, 26a fitting the full peripheral outline of the grooved pins and narrowed locking parts 25b, 26b fitting the peripheral outline of the pins at grooves 10, so that when plug 1 is inserted into the socket and twisted, plug 1 is locked additionally by grooves 10 being engaged by parts 25b, 26b. A threepin connector is described (Figs. 5, 6, not shown) in which one or more of the pins may have one or two grooves. The contact elements may be split into two longitudinal portions (Figs. 8, 9, 10, not shown) one portion being of lighter gauge than the other and possibly spring- loaded to provide resilience for a heavier gauge pin and to enable different sized pins to be used. A continuous outlet strip is shown in Fig. 11 in which contact elements 94 are mounted at intervals in an insulating base 93 in contact with bus-bars 95, 96 with pairs of arcuate slots 97 above them and with an opening 110 for incoming wires to be connected to the bus-bars 95, 96 by screws 111. A protective cover 101 may be provided. The outlet strip can be converted for use in a three-wire system by providing earthing springs 99 at intervals, these being connected to earth and making contact with the cover 101 which clamps a conversion insert 103 which has earthing togues bent in to make contact with earthing strips 104b on the outside of a suitable plug 104, located in position by cut-outs 104a engaging projections in adaptor 103.
