Abstract
983,640. Travelling wave tubes. M-O VALVE CO. Ltd., A. REDDISH, and D. W. WARD. Dec. 31, 1962 [Jan. 16, 1962], No. 1632/62. Heading H1D. A crossed field electron gun has the electron emitting space arranged convergently with either a straight or curved geometry. The gun comprises in an evacuated envelope (not shown) a delay line 1, a sale 2 and an electron gun constituted by an indirectly heated cathode 3 and a plate 4. The delay line has a pair of copper combs secured to one face of a copper block having teeth 5, 6 intercolated with each other. The delay line is provided with an output connector in the form of a waveguide. At its other end the waveguide is provided with a reflectionless termination. The sole is constructed from molybdenum strip insulated from the block 8 and is spaced from the line by a space through which an electron beam flows. The cathode 3 is in the form of a tubular block 16 of porous sintered tungsten having disposed within it a heater 18. The block has metal foil on three sides except the emissive surface 21 which is co-planar with the sale 2. The plate 4 is of tantalum strip and is arranged convergently and projecting beyond the cathode block. Sideways escape of the electrons is prevented by metal strips 24. The tube is disposed between the poles of a permanent magnet (not shown).
