Abstract

967,966. Travelling-wave tubes; magnetrons. S-F-D LABORATORIES Inc. Oct. 16, 1961 [Oct. 14, 1960], No. 37031/61. Heading H1D. A slow-wave structure, e.g. for an " M "-type travelling wave tube, comprises a plurality of regularly spaced parallel conductors 1, Fig. 1, a pair of opposed boundary members 2 joining together the extremities of the conductors, a first plurality of transverse conductors 3 spaced from one of the boundary members and closer to this boundary member than to the opposite boundary member and connecting alternate parallel conductors to the parallel conductor on one side thereof, a second plurality of transverse conductors 3 spaced from the opposite boundary member and closer to this boundary member than to the first-named boundary member and connecting the said alternate parallel conductors to the parallel conductor on the other side, the outer portions of the parallel conductors extending from each transverse conductor to the boundary member closer thereto providing a high impedance to the boundary member, and a ground plane member 13, Fig. 2, disposed adjacent the active portions of the parallel conductors which extend between the transverse conductors and spaced from the active portions by a distance such that the bandwidth of the structure is substantially increased. The structure may be a unitary structure, Fig. 2, or formed out of a network of hollow pipes, Fig. 5, through which a coolant fluid may flow. Input and output terminals 11, 12, Fig. 2, are provided at each end, a low impedance being provided by end slots 6 each extending a quarter wavelength from the end conductors 7, 8. In the travelling-wave magnetron shown in Fig. 4, a cathode 22 is surrounded by the slow-wave structure 5<SP>1</SP> which is itself surrounded by an anode block 20. In operation, an R.F. wave injected on to the delay line is sufficient to initiate emission from the cold cathode 22, and the emission remains continuous due to secondary emission resulting from back-bombardment of electrons which have gained energy from the wave.
