Abstract

1,060,150. Velocity modulated tubes. M-D VALVE CO. Ltd., and A. REDDISH. Dec. 1, 1965 [Dec. 3, 1964], No. 49296/64. Heading HID. In a crossed field travelling wave tube, in which an electron beam travels along an elongated interaction space the opposite faces of which are defined by a cathode and a further, opposed electrode, the spacing between the two electrodes varies along their length in a manner defined by numerical conditions upon the spacing and its first and second rates of change, whereby the electron emission density is rendered relatively uniform along the length of the cathode, with consequent decrease of noise. The interaction space is defined by the emissive surface (8) of the cathode (6), a separate aligned electrode (3), and a further, opposed, electrode (4) which incorporates a folded waveguide delay line having ridged waveguide input and output connections, the electrons being restrained within the interaction space by side shield electrodes (12) and beam-forming electrode (14), and passing to the collector (5) under the influence of the crossed fields. The cathode (6) is in the form of an elongated hollow box of square cross-section, housing a heater helix, and formed of three molybdenum plates and an emissive fourth plate (8) of porous tungsten. To inhibit oscillation, the delay line may either be provided with an attenuating region, or be divided into separate input and output parts at an intermediate point along its length, the adjacent ends of the two parts being provided with reflectionless terminations. The copper envelope block includes coolant channels 27 provided with twisted metal lugs 30 to promote circulation.
