Abstract

[Also in Division B8] Parallel high and low-speed gear trains 8, 9, 10, Fig. 1, and 5, 13, 16, permanently engaged between a driving shaft 2 and a gear 11 of a winch drum 12, operate selectively under the control of the axial movement of a pinion 5 on the driving shaft 2 in the low-speed drive and which has inclined teeth, so that under load the pinion 5 moves axially to disengage a friction clutch 1, Fig. 2, in the high-speed drive. Under light load conditions the friction clutch 7 for the high-speed drive is held in engagement by a spring 6 while free-wheel clutch 15 in the pinion 13 of the low-speed drive permits over-run. The apparatus is adapted for use in hoisting lifeboats so that temporary slack in the ropes due to wave motion may be taken up immediately by the high-speed drive.
