Abstract

982,561. Transformers. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. May 23, 1961 [April 6, 1960], No. 12236/60. Heading H1T. A helically wound coil of insulated copper strip has a packing member at its ends for squaring off the coil to an overall cylindrical shape, the packing being in the form of an edge block built from concentrically arranged tapered strips of insulating material. The strips 1 (Fig. 1) are cut from a single flat sheet (Figs. 2, 3, not shown), and assembled to form a block in the order of cutting, so that each successive lamination is longer than the adjacent inner one by 2# times the material thickness. Fig. 4 shows edge blocks 16, 17 each composed of three strips 13, 14, 15, and fitted to a single layer helical transformer coil having turns 11 in insulating sheaths 12. Similarly constructed ege blocks may be provided for double layer helical coils (Figs. 5, 6, not shown). The coil assembly is treated with insulating varnish and stoved. When applied to dry type transformers the insulating strips may be silicon resin bonded asbestos paper or silicon resin bonded glass laminated sheet for Class " C " or " H " working.
