Abstract

Materials consisting wholly or partly of cellulose are coloured and modified by treatment under alkaline conditions with an aqueous solution or dispersion of a reactive dyestuff and a cellulose reactant containing at least two groups capable of reacting with the cellulose under such conditions. The specified cellulose reactants are disodium tris-(beta-sulphatoethyl) sulphonium inner salt, divinyl sulphone, di-(beta-hydroxyethyl)-sulphone, diepoxides, dichloropropanol and halogeno-triazines. Numerous types of reactive dye are listed. The cellulose material may be impregnated with an aqueous liquid at 10-95 DEG C containing the dye and cellulose reactant and subsequently impregnated with an alkaline solution and then steamed or allowed to stand for a few seconds up to about 24 hours. In certain cases the material may be impregnated with an aqueous solution containing dye, cellulose reactant and alkali, and fixed at temperatures up to 200 DEG C. In this an alkali-generating substance may be employed. Specified materials are of cotton, linen, viscose and polynosic and high wet modulus rayons.
