Abstract
982,309. Bearings. DOWTY HYDRAULIC UNITS Ltd., and UNIPAT A.G. March 22, 1962 [March 24, 1961], No. 10908/61. Heading F2A. In a fluid thrust bearing a shaft 1, having a shoulder 38, is mounted in a housing 6, having an annular recess 41, 42 therein, which receives an annular piston 43. A chamber 39 formed by the recess 41/42 and an end-face of the piston is supplied by pressurized fluid through a passage 46 in the housing 6. The piston 43 has seals 44, 45 mounted thereon, a passage 49 therethrough and an annular recesss 47 therein to which the pressurized fluid is passed. The passage 49 has a restrictor 51 therein so that the pressure in the recess 47 is less than the pressure in the recess 41/42; additionally, the effective area of the recess 47 is less than that of the recess 41/42. A balance is maintained by excess fluid escaping from the recess 47 and passing between lands 48 of the piston and the shoulder 38 of the shaft.
