Abstract

1,081,867. Shaft seals. SOCIETE DES FORGES ET ATELIERS DU CREUSOT. May 5, 1965, No. 18962/65. Heading F2B. A fluid-tight lubricated packing for a rotaryshaft 1, e.g. the shaft of an agitator in a vat for chemical products comprising packing rings 5 located between the shaft and a sleeve 6 and pressed axially by means of a piston 24, pressurized fluid being fed into a cylinder so as to act on a face 23 of the piston. The sleeve 6 is located in a housing 7 so as to leave an annular space divided into two chambers 12, 13 by rings 9, 10, 11, the chambers communicating, via ports 30, 31, with a space 4 between two sets of packing rings 5. In operation, pressurized oil is fed through a port 20 and flows via a passage 22 into the cylinder to act on the piston and thereby load the packing rings. The oil also serves to lubricate and cool the packing by flowing via a passage 40 into the chamber 12, through port 30 into the space 4 and then via port 31 into the chamber 13 where it is returned to a reservoir via a passage 34. The oil also flows through a space between the sleeve 6 and a jacket 2 rotatable with the shaft, at a pressure greater than that of the substance being sealed. In a modification, separate supplies are fed into the packing arrangement for pressurizing, lubricating and cooling the packing rings. Pressure-reducers and gauges may be used in the various supplies.
