Abstract

[Also in Division F1] Part of the liquid pumped by a gear pump 12, Fig. 1 (not shown), is passed through a filter 18, has its pressure increased by a booster-pump 22 and is conveyed to bearing-faces 96, Fig. 2 (not shown), of bearings 70, 72, 74 and 76 and to gear faces 98 of gears 40 and 42, the by-passed liquid being forced by the booster-pump 22 along a line 24 and through ports 26, 28, 30 and 32 and passages 100 in the bearings 70, 72, 74 and 76. Some of the liquid enters chambers 92 and 94 of slidably adjustable bearings 70, 72 respectively and forces the bearing faces 96 against the gear faces 98. Lubrication is facilitated by arcuate grooves 102, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), in the bearing-faces 96 the grooves 102 being supplied with liquid via the passages 100 and being positioned below the gear root diameter; by lubrication-grooves 110 in the bores of the bearings 70, 72, 74 and 76; by lubrication-grooves 106 in journals 62, 66 of the gear 40 and in journals 64, 68 of the gear 42; and by lubrication-slots 104, Fig. 5 (not shown), in the gear faces 98. The pressurized liquid prevents ingress of foreign matter between the bearing and gear faces 96, 98.
