Abstract
1289442 Liquid seals HALBERGERHUTTE GmbH 15 Jan 1971 [6 March 1970] 2161/71 Heading F2B A device for sealing the drive shaft of a centrifugal pump (for circulating sodium in a nuclear reactor) comprises a cushion of protective gas in a gas space 3 above the surface of the liquid being delivered, an oil collector 4 in the gas space, a pair of slide ring packings 8, 9, a further slide ring packing 12, and two separate pressureoil circuits 13, 16 which admit oil to first and second oil chambers 7, 11 such that the oil pressure in the first chamber is greater than the pressure of the liquid being delivered but less than the oil pressure in the second chamber. Any oil leakage from the first chamber. passes into the oil collector which is provided with an internal portion forming a communicating gap 5 between the oil collector and the gas space below, the gap being 5 covered by an oil slinger 6. The oil in the oil chambers 7,11 is maintained at the required pressures by the heights of two oil reservoirs 13, 16, the gas spaces 15, 18 of which are maintained at the same pressure as that in the gas space 3. Leakage oil collected in the oil collector 4 is periodically returned to the oil reservoir 13 when the oil level reaches a pulse generator point 27 on a measuring probe 26; when the level is reached, a control member 36 controls operation of valves 29, 30, 31 which reduce the pressure in the gas space 15 to cause the oil in the oil collector to be drawn up into the oil reservoir 13 via pipe-lines 33 and 19. The oil in the chamber 7 is cooled by circulation through a cooler 22 by an impeller 10.
