Abstract
981,999. Universal joints. E.A.M.E.S. (READING) Ltd. Dec. 10, 1963, No. 48691/63. Heading F2U. Driving wheels 3, 4 of a model railway locomotive are driven by an electric motor (not shown) through a worm gear 5 connected to the wheels 3, 4 by a muff coupling comprising a tubular member 16 of resilient electrically insulated material such as polyethylene, formed externally with three axially spaced concentric circular steps, and internally with a D or other part-circular bore which engages complementary shaft extensions 14, 15 of stub axles of the driving wheels 3, 4, the worm gear 5, after passing freely over the small end 17 of the member 16, being a force fit on the centre step 18 thereof and axially located against the shoulder formed by the large end 19. The stub axles are formed with large diameter journals 10, 11 and are knurled on the shaft portions 8, 9, which engage in the wheels 3, 4. The knurled shafts 8, 9 together with the D-shaped bore of the member 16 ensure that connecting rod pins 6, 7 are maintained at 90 degrees spacing.
