Abstract
987,572. Universal joints; slip couplings. RHEINMETAL G.m.b.H. June 2, 1961 [June 25, 1960], No. 20064/61. Headings F2C and F2U. A constant velocity universal joint comprises drive-transmitting balls 7 located at intersecting points 10 of a crossing formation of arcuate semi-circular grooves 8, 9 formed, as a mirror image of each other, in an inner ball head 1 and an outer socket respectively. The socket is in the form of an expanding ring made up of triangular segments 5 and is retained by a nut 6 within a body 4 such that it may permit slip between the ring and body on overload. An overload shear means which act as fracturing connections between the ring and body may also be provided. Each segment 5 is formed along its wedge-shaped inner edges with half grooves 9a, 9b which together with the ball head grooves 8 may be formed straight or curved, when viewed axially. Specification 430,859 is referred to.
