Abstract

962,454. Universal joints. B.R.D. CO. Ltd. March 9, 1961 [March 9, 1960], No. 8237/60. Heading F2U. A constant velocity universal joint comprises a ball 11 and a socket 16 fast with driving and driven shafts 10, 15 and drivingly interconnected by balls 27 disposed in intersecting meridian tracks 14, 26 formed in the ball 11 and in inserts 19 secured in recesses in the socket 16. The balls are maintained at the intersections of the tracks, in the bisector plane between the shafts, by the track geometry, but a retaining ring 28 having ball receiving apertures 29 is provided to retain the balls in position should the angle between the shafts be great enough to align a pair of tracks. The inserts 19 are slightly longer than a cylindrical part 18 of the socket into which they are inserted and they are retained in position by a ring 24 secured to the part 18 by screws 25. A gaiter 30 retains lubricant in the joint. Specification 962,455 is referred to.
