Abstract

598,584. Universal joint casings. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Aug. 23, 1945, No. 21623. Convention date, July 27, 1944. [Class 80(ii)] [Also in Group XXVI] A sealing means for a universal joint 16 between driving and driven members 18, 14 comprises a lubricant-resistant flexible closure member 24 extending axially along and co-axial with either the driving or the driven member, and has interior and exterior grooved surfaces; the interior grooves serving to return lubricant to a reservoir 17 surrounding the joint 16 during rotation of the same. The grooves are helical and the exterior ones assist in the cooling of the closure member. Sleeves 28, 30 secured to each end of the flexible member 24 serve to secure one end to the reservoir casing 10, and to enable the other end to be freely mounted on the driving member 18.
