Abstract

Wood is proofed against fungi by treatment with a solution, emulsion, or suspension containing 0.2-1.5% of tribromophenol, as such or as the lithium, sodium, potassium, copper, or zinc salt. 2,3,4-, 2,3,5-, 2,4,5-, 2,4,6-, or 3,4,5-tribromophenol may be employed. An aqueous solution of an alkali metal salt having a pH of less than 8 may contain borax as a buffer. Tribromophenol or its copper or zinc salt may be dissolved in white spirit (a petroleum fraction having a boiling range of 152-204 DEG C.) or an aromatic petroleum fraction having a boiling range of 190-270 DEG C. and containing at least 80% of aromatic compounds. The solution may form an emulsion with water. Copper or zinc tribromophenate may be formed in situ in the wood by separate treatment with tribromophenol and copper or zinc naphthenate or oleate, or by separate treatment with alkali metal tribromophenate and copper or zinc sulphate. An aqueous solution may contain "Teepol" (Registered Trade Mark) and an emulsion may contain "Lissopol" (Registered Trade Mark) or "Tensiofix" as surface active agents. "BHC," "Aldrin," or "Dieldrin" may be present as insecticides.
