Abstract

A process for the manufacture of oriented polyamide filaments having a residual shrinkage of not less than 20% comprises forming a crystalline homopolyamide and an interpolyamide into an homogeneous block copolyamide under polyamide-forming temperatures and conditions, the concentration of the interpolyamide component being not less than 50% by weight of the block copolyamide, and thereafter forming the block copolyamide into filaments and drawing the filaments to orient them. The examples describe the preparation of block copolyamide filaments from:-(I) and (II) polyhexamethylene adipamide and an interpolymer of hexamethylene diammonium adipate and e -caprolactam; (III) polyhexamethylene adipamide and an interpolymer of hexamethylene diammonium sebacate and hexamethylene diammonium adipate; (IV) poly-e -caprolactam and an interpolymer of e -caprolactam and hexamethylene diammonium adipate; (V) poly-e -caprolactam and an interpolymer of hexamethylene diammonium sebacate and hexamethylene diammonium adipate; (VI) polyhexamethylene sebacamide and an interpolymer of hexamethylene diammonium adipate and e -caprolactam and (VII) polyhexamethylene sebacamide and an interpolymer of hexamethylene diammonium adipate and hexamethylene diammonium sebacate.
