Abstract

Synthetic linear polyamides are made by condensing an aliphatic diamine containing from 4 to 12 carbon atoms and an a -monoalkyl adipic acid wherein said alkyl group contains from 2 to 12 carbon atoms, or amide-forming derivatives of said diamine and/or acid. Specified diamines are hexamethylene, 3-methyl hexamethylene, tetramethylene, decamethylene, octamethylene and N : N1 - dimethyl hexamethylene diamine, ethylene bis-(3-aminopropyl) - ether and 1 : 6 - diamino - 6 - methyl heptane. Specified a -monoalkyl adipic acids are a -ethyl adipic, a -n-propyl adipic, a -sec.-propyladipic, a -n-butyladipic, a -iso-butyladipic, a -amyladipic, a -n-hexyladipic, a -n-octyladipic, a -n-decyladipic and a -n-dodecyladipic acid. Other polyamide-forming reactants, e.g. adipic, sebacic, dodecamethylene dicarboxylic, hexamethylene dicarboxylic and pimelic acid and epsilon-caprolactam may also be present. In Examples (1) to (4), hexamethylene diamine is condensed with: (1) a -ethyladipic acid; (2) a -n-dodecyladipic acid; (3) a -n-butyladipic acid; and (4) a -n-hexyladipic acid. Example (5) describes the preparation of polyamides from low molecular weight polyhexamethylene adipamide and polyhexamethylene a -ethyladipamide whilst in Example (6) hexamethylene diammonium adipate and hexamethylene diammonium a -dodecyladipate are condensed together. Solutions of the polyamides in solvents, e.g. ethanol or ethylene chlorohydrin may be used for coating fabrics, wool and metal. The polyamides may also be used as adhesives, as interliners for collars and dress belts &c. and as filaments, foils, rods, films or bristles. Specification 461,237, [Group IV], and U.S.A. Specifications 2,245,129 and 2,617,786 are referred to.
