Abstract

A random copolyamide consists of at least 20% by weight of polyhexamethylene adipamide units and at least 20% by weight of units of at least two of polyhexamethylene sebacamide, dodecanamide, undecanamide, and isophthalamide. In an example, the copolymer is prepared by heating an aqueous solution of the corresponding diamine-dicarboxylic acid salts containing TiO2. In a control example a copolymer is prepared by heating an aqueous solution containing TiO2, hexamethylene diamine adipate and hexamethylene diammonium sebacate.ALSO:Composite filaments or monofilamentary yarns consist of two continuous adherent eccentrically arranged components consisting of synthetic linear polyamides, in which one component consists of a crystalline homopolyamide and the other component consists of a random copolyamide consisting of at least 20% by weight of polyhexamethylene adipamide units and at least 20% by weight of units of at least two of polyhexanethylene sebacamide, dodecanamide, undecanamide, and isophthalamide. The copolyamide component preferably contains 30 to 70% by weight of polyhexamethylene sebacamide units or at least 10% by weight of polyhexamethylene dodecanamide units. The term "eccentrically arranged" is meant to include both side-by-side and truly eccentric sheath-core structures. In the example, an eccentric sheath-core monofil is formed using as the sheath polyhexamethylene adipamide (6-6 nylon) of relative viscosity about 46 and as the core a copolymer consisting of 50% by weight polyhexamethylene adipamide, 41% polyhexamethylene sebacamide, 8% polyhexamethylene dodecanamide and 1% polyhexamethylene undecanamide. The homopolymer and the copolymer both in flake form are conditioned by exposure to humidifi nitrogen at 125 DEG C and melt spun at 290 DEG C and 282 DEG C melt temperature respectively to form eccentric sheather-core hosiery monofils containing equal amounts of the copolymer and homopolymer.
