Abstract

1351898 Conjugate polyamide filaments TOYO BOSEKI KK TOYO SPINNING CO Ltd) 30 March 1972 15063/72 Heading B5B [Also in Division C3] A crimpable conjugate filament comprises a homopolyamide component which is either poly-#- caprolactam or polyhexamethylene adipamide and a random copolyamide component comprising from 80 to 98%, preferably 80-95%, by weight of the same repeating monomeric units as those of which the said homopolyamide is comprised and from 2% to 20% by weight of monomeric units derived from a salt of 1,3-bis-(aminomethyl) cyclohexane and a dibasic acid or a mixture of such salts derived from a mixture of the cis-isomer and the transisomer of 1,3-bis(aminomethyl)cyclohexane. The homopolyamide may be present in an amount of from 30 to 70% by weight and the random copolyamide in an amount of from 7 to 30%; preferably about 50% by weight homopolyamide is present, the balance being the random copolyamide. The dibasic acid may be aliphatic, e.g. sebacic, adipic or 1,12-dodecanedicarboxylic acid, or aromatic, e.g. terephthalic or isophthalic acid. Mixtures of the trans-isomer and cis-isomer of 1,3 bis(aminomethyl)cyclohexane may contain from 60 to 80% by weight of the cis-isomer and from 20 to 40% of the trans-isomer; preferably about 70% by weight of the cis-isomer and about 30% by weight of the trans-isomer. The random copolyamide may be in the form of a composition with an agent, suitably present in an amount of 0À02% to 2% by weight of the copolyamide, to prevent adhesion between the filaments, represented by formula (I) or formula (II) R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 are each a straight alkyl group containing from 11 to 18 carbon atoms and n is an integer from 1 to 10. Specified compounds include N,N<SP>1</SP>-distearoyl ethylenediamine; N,N<SP>1</SP>- distearoyl hexamethylene diamine, N,N<SP>1</SP>-dilauroyl hexamethylene diamine; N,N<SP>1</SP>-dipalmitoyl hexamethylene diamine; N,N<SP>1</SP>-distearoyl nonamethylene diamine; N,N<SP>1</SP>-dioctadecyl succinamide; N,N<SP>1</SP>-dioctadecyl adipamide; N,N<SP>1</SP>- didodecyl adipamide; N,N<SP>1</SP>-dipentadecyl adipamide; and N,N<SP>1</SP>-dioctadecyl sebacamide. Desirably the composition also satisfies the inequality where C is the percentage by weight of the agent on the basis of the total weight of the random copolyamide, M is the percentage by weight of monomeric units in the random copolyamide which units are the same as the repeating monomeric units of which the homopolyamide is comprised and n is as defined above. The random copolyamide may comprise comonomeric units, suitably in an amount of not more than 10% by weight, of at least one kind other than the main repeating units thereof which are the same as the repeating monomeric units of which the homopolyamide is formed and other than the repeating units derived from the dibasic acid salt or mixture of salts of 1,3-bis-(aminomethyl) cyclohexane. The comonomeric units may be hexamethylene adipamide units or hexamethylene terephthalamide units when the main repeating units are caproamide units, and the comonomeric units may be caproamide units or hexamethylene terephthalamide units when the main repeating units are hexamethylene adipamide units. The conjugate filaments are melt-spun and drawn in known manner. Draw ratios of 2À0 to 6À0 may be employed, using temperatures up to 150‹ C., suitably using a heated plate. The drawn filaments are then heat-set while free to relax to a limited extent, followed by heattreatment in the completely relaxed state to develop crimps. In Examples the copolymer is prepared by hydrolytic melt polymerization.
