Abstract

A composition for selectively stripping electrodeposited nickel from a base metal comprises a nitro-organic compound, an ammonium compound and a sulphur compound yielding sulphide ions in aqueous solution, whereby ammonia is released in solution during stripping. The nitro-organic compound, preferably at least 1% by weight of the composition, corresponds to the formula RNO2 wherein R is preferably an aromatic-carboxylic/sulphonic/phosphoni acid or -hydroxyl radical, or a mixture of the o-, m- and pisomers thereof, or the alkali metal or ammonium salt thereof, e.g. nitrochlorobenzenes, nitrobenzoic acid salts, nitrobenzene sulphonates, nitroanilines or nitrophenols. Alternatively R may be an aliphatic radical such as in the nitroparaffins with 1-6 carbon atoms. The ammonium compound may be a (bi)carbonate, (bi)sulphate, (bi)phosphate, nitrate, chloride, citrate, tartrate, oxalate, lactate, acetate, propionate, benzoate, phthalate, maleate, or a salt of an amino acid, e.g. nitriloacetic, ethylenediaminetetraacetic, diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid, from which ammonia is released by adding caustic alkali. The sulphur compound is preferably an alkali metal sulphide. Some of the ammonium salt may be replaced by ammonia solution and urea may be additionally added. For example, the composition may comprise by weight 2-20 parts of Na m-nitrobenzene sulphonate, 10-85 parts of ammonium sulphate, trace-1 part of Na2S and 0-10 parts of urea. A further 10-40 parts of NaOH may be added to a bath of this composition. Specification 892,054 and U.S.A. Specifications 2,649,361 and 2,698,781 are referred to.
