Abstract

The tendency of ammonium nitrate to cake is reduced by admixing with a water-soluble salt of an alkylsulphuric, alkylsulphonic, alkarylsulphonic or alkylphosphoric acid which has 8 to 30 carbon atoms in the molecule, at least 4 of which being contained in an aliphatic hydrocarbon chain, or with a mixture of such salts. Admixture may be effected by crystallising the ammonium nitrate in the presence of the salt or by treating already crystallised ammonium nitrate with the salt in the form of a solution, as powders, or in the molten state. The amount added may be 0.005 to 5 per cent based on the ammonium nitrate. Various salts are specified. Specifications 625,077 and 627,680 are referred to.
