Abstract

978,705. Plastics bottles. METAL BOX CO. Ltd. July 29, 1963 [Oct. 29, 1962], No. 40849/62. Headings B8C, B8D and B8T. A plastics bottle has at its mouth a rim 5 with a smooth outer edge 7 standing up from and integral with a flexible flange 6 which is integral with and extends laterally from the neck 4, 9 towards the longitudinal axis of the bottle. The smooth edge 7 is obtained by machining the bottle after moulding. In the embodiment shown the flange 6 slopes at an angle, 10, of about 20 degrees and the mouth is closed by a disc 11 of plastics material or plastic-coated metal foil heat sealed to the smooth edge 7 with its outer edge 12 turned down about the neck 9 to provide a portion to grip when stripping the closure from the bottle. In another embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), the flange 6 is at right angles to the axis of the bottle, and the mouth is closed by a screw cap whose crown abuts the smooth edge 7 to provide a seal. The bottle has ribbed portions 2, 3 and an inwardly projecting base 13 which is pulled outwards by a vacuum during filling and sealing of the bottle, and then restored to position by the resiliency of the material to increase the pressure inside the bottle and prevent panelling.
