Abstract

977,895. Textile treating apparatus. W. R. GRACE & CO. Oct. 4, 1963 [Oct. 8, 1962], No. 39259/63. Heading D1L. Web treating apparatus comprises means for drawing a web of textile material through a bath 11 of treating fluid, around web flexing means adapted to be submerged in the bath, said flexing means including a plurality of transversely arranged free-running helically faced rolls in a polygonalarray and power means for rotating the array of rolls as a unit. As shown the web flexing element comprises a driven shaft 10 and rolls 12, 13, 14 rotatably supported in spiders 15,16 fastened to shaft 10. Rolls 12, 13, 14 are each provided with a helical face 21 which runs from a centre point 22 outwards to the ends of the roll. Web 23 to be washed enters the bath 11 over roll 24, passes under roll 27 to the flexing rolls 12, 13, 14, then around shock absorbing rolls 29, 31 which may have a brush or other resilient surface, and thence via roll 32 and a pair of squeeze roll 34, 35 out of the bath. As the web travels around the flexing means it is vigorously forced up and down in the treating fluid and further the taut fabric pulls into and partially folds about each helical turn causing undulations to develop which run rapidly outwards to the selvage.
