Abstract

977,722. Purifying exhaust gases. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. Nov. 3, 1961 [Nov. 17, 1960], No. 39476/60. Heading F1B. Exhaust gases entering at 5 flow through one set of passages 13 to the far end of a combustion chamber 9 through which they flow in the opposite direction, the gases then flowing through a second set of passages 14, alternating with passages 13, to the outlet 6. The passages 13, 14, are formed by a corrugated member whose crests contact an inner casing 8 and a partition 11, the right-hand ends of passages 13 being open to the inlet 5 and their left-hand ends closed whilst apertured at 3 to connect with the combustion chamber. The right-hand end of the passages 14 are closed to the inlet 5 but connected to the combustion chamber 9 whilst their left-hand ends are open to the outlet 6. An air inlet 7 leads to the space between inner and outer casings 4, 8, from which space air is admitted to the gases in chamber 9 through perforated tubes 17. Ignition means may be provided in chamber 9. In a modification, Fig. 6, the chamber is oval in cross-section and the alternate passages 27a, 27b, through which the gases flow to and from the combustion chamber extend around the combustion chamber 26.
