976, 998. Developing electrostatic images. KALLE A. G. Dec. 18, 1962 [Dec. 27, 1961], No. 47823/62. Heading G2H. Apparatus for developing electrostatic images comprises a trough containing a developer mixture of iron filings and toner powder, an agitator 15 in the trough, an iron roller 1 formed by a number of rotor plates supporting windings to which current is supplied to magnetize the roller and having a covering 11 of synthetic plastic material, means for interrupting the magnetizing current once in every revolution of the roller, and a deflector plate 14 coacting with the roller as it moves away from electrostatic image-bearing member so that when the magnetizing current is interrupted the spent developer material is deflected towards the wall of the trough. The covering 11 may be a polyolefine, a vinyl polymer, a polyamide, a polyester, a phenol-formaldehyde resin or other plastics used as transformer insulators and may have an electrically conductive surface as of silver by means of which it may be earthed or have a bias voltage applied so as to act as a development control electrode. The toner component of the developer in the trough may be replenished from a reservoir 17 containing an agitator 25 by metered additions controlled by plungers 18 operated from a motordriven eccentric 23. The magnetizing current for each winding 9 which occupies a pair of diametrically opposite recesses 8 may be applied by a brush engaging a slip ring mounted on the drum shaft which is non-conducting over the sector between the points 12 and 13.
